Police begin investigation into beheading of minor in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged beheading of a minor, Mohammed Saidu, by an Almajiri at Kanwa village, Madobi Local Government Area of the state.

The State Police Commissioner, Usaini Gumel, told newsmen in Kano on Friday that 6-year-old Saidu was allegedly killed by the 16-year-old Almajiri simply identified as Abdullahi.

He said Abdullahi, who hails from Zamfara, was sighted at Kanwa village by a good Samaritan while in possession of a blood-stained knife strongly suspected to be human blood.

He said the headless body of Saidu was found in a nearby primary school.

According to him, the suspect was then taken to the house of the village head to prevent him from being lynched.

He said the angry mob, however, overwhelmed the village head, descended on the suspect, and inflicted serious injuries on him.

He said when the police arrived, the suspect confessed to the crime, saying he dumped the head of the victim in a pit toilet adjacent to the primary school.

He said the suspect was taken to the Kwankwaso Cottage Hospital but died while receiving treatment.

The State Police boss said the remains of the victim were recovered and moved to the hospital for examination and was later released to his relatives for burial.

Stepdad Charged With Manslaughter After 8Yr Old Boy Died Of Fentanyl Overdose

An 8-year-old Kentucky boy believed to have died from an allergic reaction to strawberries last month was actually killed by fentanyl with his stepdad now facing criminal charges in his overdose death.

Elementary school student, Trey Harris died last month of “fentanyl intoxication,” officials announced as his 33-year-old stepfather Antonio Person was charged with manslaughter on Wednesday, according to WFIE.

Person and Harris were living under the same roof and it was determined that Person had drugs inside the home, according to a Madisonville police report.

But questions about how the child ingested the deadly opioid remain.

“It has been confirmed that the child’s death was due to a fentanyl overdose. It is still not confirmed as to whether that was intentional or accidental,” officer Brandon Holeman said, according to the station.

“That investigation is still ongoing. So we don’t know whether he ingested it intentionally, accidentally, how he came in contact with it so that is something we are still looking it.”

When the youngster developed a rash after eating a batch of strawberries at a high school fundraiser, his family gave him Benadryl and soaked him in a bath before seeking medical treatment on the night of March 14, Madisonville police said.

The boy’s family brought Harris home from the hospital around 1:30 a.m. the next day and then changed his clothes and put him to bed. When they tried to wake him up for school hours later, he was unresponsive and later declared dead, police said.

After it was suspected Harris died from the fruit, the Hopkins County health department issued an advisory to toss strawberries purchased at the event, but the federal Food and Drug Administration said this week they were harmless.

Person, who was identified as the boy’s stepfather in an obituary, was slapped with a manslaughter charge on Wednesday after he was arrested last month on drug trafficking and illegal gun possession charges, police said.

Harris was remembered as a “fun-loving child who adored playing pranks on his mom especially and laughing,” according to his obituary.

Nigeria’s crude Bonny Light surges in March – OPEC

Nigeria’s crude oil Bonny Light surged to $87.86 per barrel in March 2024 from $85.65 per barrel in the previous month, according to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

OPEC disclosed this in its Monthly Oil Market report, published on Thursday.

The figure represents a 2.6 per cent increase from the product’s price in February.

Meanwhile, Brent crude price soared above $90 a barrel during the period under review.

The surge comes amid heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East region following the Israel and Palestine war in the Gaza Strip.

In the report, OPEC stated that it maintained its forecast for strong global oil demand in 2024, anticipating a rise of 2.25 million barrels per day, bpd this year and a further increase of 1.85 million bpd in 2025.

“The global oil demand growth forecast for 2024 remains broadly unchanged from last month’s assessment of 2.2 mb/d. Slight adjustments were made to the 1Q24 data, with a slight upward revision in OECD Europe and some non-OECD data, reflecting better-than-expected performance in oil demand data. This increase was offset by a downward revision to Africa in 1Q24 and the Middle East in the first three quarters”, the report stated.

Meanwhile, crude oil sales remain Nigeria’s major foreign reserves booster.

Federal Government seeking bribe from Binance

Binance Says It Was Asked for ‘Secret’ Payment Over Nigeria Woes.

“As our employees were leaving the venue, they were approached by unknown persons who suggested to them to make a payment in settlement of the allegations” — Binance CEO, Richard Teng.

Later that day, Binance’s local lawyer was “presented with a demand for a significant payment in cryptocurrency to be paid in secret within 48 hours to make these issues go away” — Binance CEO, Richard Teng.

Richard Teng, the firm’s chief executive officer (CEO), made the claim in a blog post shared with TheCable on Tuesday.

On February 28, the federal government detained two top executives of Binance as part of a probe bordering on illegal operations in the country and foreign exchange rate manipulations.

The detained executives included Nadeem Anjarwalla, a 37-year-old British-Kenyan and Binance’s regional manager for Africa; and Tigran Gambaryan, a 39-year-old US citizen and Binance’s head of financial crime compliance.

Nigeria’s government, on March 25, filed a criminal charge against Binance for “tax evasion” — the same period Anjarwalla fled detention.

Speaking on Binance’s issues with the Nigerian government, Teng detailed how the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange tried to engage with the authorities, including a meeting on January 8 in Abuja, where it was confronted with criminal allegations.

Teng said despite multiple requests, Binance has still not received details of the allegations, “and our employees, therefore, inquired if there was an opportunity to submit our responses in writing and in the absence of a public hearing”.

“There were a number of reasons for that, including the sensitivity of the information and getting the opportunity to see the allegations in full and prepare a thorough substantive response,” he said.

“The meeting ended with the Chair confirming they would consider the matter and revert through Binance’s local counsel.

“However, as our employees were leaving the venue, they were approached by unknown persons who suggested to them to make a payment in settlement of the allegations.

“Later that day, our local counsel — representing us at that time — was summoned by the Committee through someone purporting to be their agent, who relayed the Committee’s terms and instructed our local counsel to advise us.

“Counsel reported back that he had been presented with a demand for a significant payment in cryptocurrency to be paid in secret within 48 hours to make these issues go away and that our decision was expected by the morning.

“Our team grew increasingly concerned about their safety in Nigeria and immediately departed.”

Teng said the request was declined “via our counsel, not viewing it to be a legitimate settlement offer”.

The CEO said Binance clarified that it would engage in settlement negotiations on the conditions that the relevant petition or the details of all allegations were seen.

In addition, he said any settlement “must be official, recorded in writing, and signed by all relevant parties”.
